Have you ever had your taste buds set on something for supper, only to find you are missing a key ingredient? That happened to us last night. We had some leftover steak and all the fixings for fajitas and decided that was exactly what we would have for supper. I love fajitas and was really looking forward to it. I began going over the ingredients in my mind…
Steak. Check.
Onions. Check.
Bell peppers. Check.
Seasoning. Check.
Cheese. Check.
Sour Cream. Check.
Flour tortillas. Uh oh. Flour tortillas? Where are those flour tortillas? I could have sworn I put them right here. “Bernie? Do you know where the tortillas are?” We went through the refrigerator, freezers, and food shelves. No flour tortillas! *Aaaargh* I really wanted fajitas, darnit.
So, as in every critical dilemma I face, I turned to the internet. I was fairly certain that someone, somewhere had posted a recipe for home made flour tortillas. I had no idea what would be involved in making a tortilla, but I was hoping it wouldn’t be too difficult.
Texas Rolling Pins came through for me. The ingredients were minimal and the directions for making the tortillas were easy to understand. The only thing I had difficulty understanding was that it called for using a comal. I had never heard of a comal, but a link was provided and after clicking on it and seeing a picture, I realized I actually OWN a comal! Well, maybe it’s not a comal, but it’s darn close and it worked perfectly. See?
I took that picture after I had made the tortillas, so try to imagine it without all the flour on it. Oh, and for those of you that disparage my pack-ratiness (you know who you are… *ahem*…..Frugalmom and my dear sister), I’ll have you know that thing was a hand-me-down that I’ve owned for over 20 years and never used. But I just KNEW it was worth keeping and would one day come in very handy. So there!
At any rate, I followed the recipe and directions and in no time I had 12 of the most delicious flour tortillas I have ever tasted. Seriously.
OK, there aren’t 12 tortillas in that picture because I took it after we had eaten. But you get the idea. And now I have 8 of these little gems in the refrigerator, waiting to be gobbled up. They won’t have to wait very long.
We’ll never eat a store bought tortilla again. These babies are just that good.
Here are a couple of notes on the recipe:
I used six tablespoons of oil and one cup of water. After mixing, the dough was too sticky and I ended up adding about 1/2 cup more flour to get the right consistency. I think I will use only four tablespoons of oil the next time, and start out with 3/4 cup water. If it’s too dry, I can always add more water.
Home made flour tortillas. It’s what’s for supper.
Bee Free,
Penny

Oh! Just what I need to encourage me to get back to cooking. Thanks.
Hi Nicole – thanks for stopping by. Another interesting thing about that recipe – after rolling the dough out, you can cut little triangles, deep fat fry them, dust with powered sugar and/or dip in honey and you have sopapillas! I haven’t tried that yet. I simply do not need even one more thing to become addicted to
But I wish you would – and let me know how they turn out!
Good job, Penny! I’ve thought of making homemade tortillas, but never gotten around to it because I figured it would be difficult. I’ll have to give your recipe a try. We love tortillas around here!
You know they’re also good for breakfast burritos…
Hi Lilla – they really are easy to make. Bernie loves breakfast burritos and mentioned using them for that. I told him I’d rather make a thinner batch so they roll up easier. I made these a little thicker to hold the fajita goodies. But I just had one for lunch with leftover roasted chicken in it and it was delicious! I need to make up a big batch and use them instead of bread. I imagine they are probably less calories – and I know they taste better! Let me know if you make them and what you think.
And now all I’ve thought of all day is those sopapillas! I’ve got a sweet tooth today for some reason……
Okay. You totally knew that I was gonna make some smart ass comment about your “luck” at having that dang nice kitchen tool just hangin around waiting to be used.
Dang it. Im becoming predictable. Thats not a good sign. At any rate, the tortillas looked yummy. I will expect some of those when I make my way to your bedside holster, puppy loving, chicken owning homestead. Im just sayin. Oh.. and have I mentioned how much I love your benches? Nice job, Bernie!
frugalmom – oh, yea, I SO knew you were gonna make a smart ass comment. I just couldn’t set myself up for it – had to beat you to the punch.
Don’t forget to bring me a batch of your cinnamon rolls when you come. Like those ooey, gooey, beautiful looking ones you posted about making a while ago just to taunt us. Oh – and bring that kid that’s too darn cute to even look at. I need a good little helper around here.
penny i gots 2 of them came from my great grandma she called them gridles.
mine are 6in. and 12 in. sizes. Tex used them to make grill cheese’s. i’ve always made fryed corn cakes to go with my chip beef gravy. hows the greenhouse and garden doing.
Hey Charlotte – well now you know how to make some tortillas on those bad boys! The greenhouse and garden are doing great – the garden is LOVING this rain! I bet the radishes, potatoes, lettuce, spinach and peas grew an inch today. The pups love rain too. I donned my rain gear (which consists of my old rubber boots and the hat I bought at the last gun show Tex went to with us) and took them with me to check the mail. Even with it raining they stopped and played in the creeks for a few minutes. They get neutered/spayed in two weeks. I dread them not being here for one whole day – but I’ll be glad to get this behind us.
I am soooooooo gonna make those……… we buy loads of them cos me lads like ‘wraps’ instead of sarnies in their lunchboxes…. and they are about $4 for 6, so Im gonna have a go at the weekend to make me own
fanks for that, like I aint got enough to do lol
x
MarmiteToasty – You are welcomed. I posted that because I knew you needed just a little something to fill your time
I think you and the boys will like them. I made this first batch a little thick, as we were having fajitas and I wanted them to hold up when stuffed with goodies and then folded. I have used them this week for wraps, but they are a little thick for it. I am going to make another batch and roll them a little thinner to use for burritos and wraps. With just the two of us, this recipe is perfect. I can make a couple of batches and freeze what we won’t use for a while. Let me know what you think of them when you make them, ok?
