We’re Expecting!

Bernie and I are adopting siblings – a little boy and a little girl. They are seven weeks old. In two weeks, we will pick them up. It’s a big step, but one we feel we are ready for.

Introducing, our little bundles of joy:

Are they not just hopelessly adorable? The white one is the male and the brown one is the female. They are German Shepherd/Alaskan Malamute mix. We’ve been searching for the perfect dogs for our situation, and I know we have found them. We found them using Pet Finder. If you are looking for the perfect pet, check them out! Betty Sue from Our Critters in Ararat, Virginia is caring for these babies right now, and that’s from whom we are adopting them. Yay Betty Sue! What a great service.

The babies won’t be eight weeks old and ready to leave mama until next weekend. Unfortunately, we are out of town next weekend. Betty Sue has agreed to hold them for us until the following weekend – January 24. I just hope I can sleep between now and then. I simply can not wait! Bernie’s pretty darn excited, too. In fact, it was Bernie that looked at their pictures and immediately said I should check to see if they are still available. He’s such a sucker for a pretty face.

We’re going to start working with the puppies right away to make sure they get along with Elvis, Priscilla, and the chickens. I imagine Bernie will keep these puppies at his side most of the day as he works around the property. I’m OK with that, but I can’t help but hope that maybe, just maybe, one will be a mama’s girl and want to hang out inside with me in my office while I’m working during the week. Elvis and Priscilla may have different thoughts on that, though. Especially Elvis. He “goes to work” with me each morning and situates himself right next to my keyboard as I log in for the day.

OK. OK. Enough baby talk. I just thought you’d like to hear me talk about something other than turning ffff, ffff, ffff, um, another year older. Hey – maybe turning half a century isn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Penny

Awwww….sweet little babies. They are precious. Im thinking that they are gonna keep you busy….or Bernie, anyway!

How are you ever gonna wait till you get to pick them up?

What precious cuties! I have a black lab mix and a beautiful cat that keep me company. I am enjoying your website. I was widowed this last year and now my daughter and son in law and I are trying the “back to basics” technique. I’m excited for a spring garden! I have a renter that farms my 600 acres of cotton–thus ‘cotton lady’. In the climate of our country I think this is the way to go. I don’t have any animals yet. Am concerned about free range chickens as we have so many coyotes!
Enjoy your new additions to your family–will be waiting to here all about them.

Thank you Molly – I agree. We’ve not seen them in person yet – these pictures are all we have to go on. Betty Sue says they are way cuter in person! I can’t imagine that is possible.

Frugalmom, I don’t know how I am going to wait that long. I dreamed about them last night! And I agree with you – just look at that little girl’s face. Nothing but trouble there! We haven’t had babies (other than the peeps) in this house for many years, so I am certain we are in for some excitement!

Cotton Lady – I’m so sorry to learn you recently lost your husband. It’s an inspiration that you are “getting back to basics”. It feels good, doesn’t it? And I do know what you mean about free ranging and predators. We have many here – and it’s one of the many reasons we wanted to get dogs. I worry every day that my chickens are running around outside, but I know losing one or two of them to predators is better than the issues I had when I kept them in their run. Not everyone has those though, and not everyone can free range as easily as I can. If you do get serious about chickens, may I suggest you start small so that it’s easier to give them as much room as possible in their run and coop? Maybe 5 – 8 hens and make sure they have plenty of coop and run space. If you can build two runs and alternate them between, that would be even better. I can’t wait to hear about your garden this year and the things you and your family do to get back to basics! Please be sure to let me know.

    Take care,
    Penny

Oh, they are just beautiful and what a mix. They should make the perfect farm dog.

  6. basicliving says:

Thanks, Trixi – we knew we wanted a shepherd mix of some sort, and the malamute should work out well. We had a hard time finding a mix that wasn’t some sort of hunting dog – or bird dog! With chickens, this just didn’t seem like a good idea. Since I work from home, and Bernie is semi-retired, we’re here all day, and can spent a lot of time working with them. Seems like the day we get them will never get here!
