Well, I Guess it IS That Time of Year…..
December 19th, 2009We are in the middle of a snow storm. Two hours ago it looked as though it was slowing down, so I took my measuring stick out and sampled a few areas. 16 inches of snow on the ground. And then? It started snowing like crazy again.
At 4PM, this is what the chicken coop looked like.
And it’s still snowing. *sigh* But look at all these gorgeous snow flakes.
I am in awe of these beautiful flakes.
They look like those paper snow flakes all children cut out in the winter.
The detail is exquisite, and simply amazing.
These pictures aren’t the best, but I hope you can see how awesomely beautiful these snowflakes are.
I had dark gloves on, so I laid them on the steps and just snapped some pictures as the snowflakes landed on them.
So very, very pretty. They take my breath away.
I usually don’t care for cold weather or snow. I’m not sure that’s changed much. But there are two things I wouldn’t give a million dollars for today - watching the pups play and romp in the snow, and finding all those gorgeous snowflakes. I almost cried watching them land. Their beauty was awe inspiring.
And, since it really is that time of year, look at this gorgeous wreath:
That’s Nancy, Debra’s (my sister) best friend from childhood. They all came up for a visit last weekend. Debra and Nancy brought everything necessary to make this wreath. The three of us put it together, and now it’s hanging by the woodburning stove.
No sense hanging a wreath outside on the homestead. Not many people wander into the middle of these woods. And I like having it inside where we can enjoy it.
So, it’s officially winter and it’s officially the Christmas holiday - even though my calendar tells me different
I hope each of you enjoys the season! We’re making the best of it on the homestead!

Wow, those snowflakes are amazingly beautiful, you captured their intricacy well with your camera. I’m quite impressed. I’ve never photographed snowflakes before… if we ever get any snow here in KS I’ll have to give it a whirl. I don’t envy you all this snow! Stay warm and safe!
(And that wreath is absolutely gorgeous too, I agree with you hanging it inside.)

I totally agree with Oz Girl! I never really thought that that’s actually how a real live snowflake looks! I’ve never spent that much time looking at them before up close. They are beautiful! And the wreath is beautiful too! Good spot for it. Beautiful pictures!
Hope to see you soon! Take Care and be safe and warm;0)
Love ya!

Oz Girl - Well, I was disappointed I didn’t get a really good shot of any of those flakes, but I think you can get the idea by looking at them. I love that wreath too! Nancy and Debra bought everything we used in making it and guided me in the whole making of the whole thing. They really are quite talented. I think I’m going to leave it up year round. It’s just so danged pretty!
Julie - I’ve only ever seen those kind of flakes twice. Both times it was in the 20s while it was snowing. And even though it’s been in the 20s and snowed around here before, the flakes don’t usually come down like that. Normally we just have blobs of snow. But when it’s cold, they crystallize and come down in such gorgeous shapes. I think it has to be very cold and very dry. Whatever it is, I am totally in awe of them. I stood outside forever just watching them land on my gloves and jacket. Finally I said “I’ve got to try and get pictures of these”! I was so happy some of the pictures came out ok. See you in a few days! Love you!

Hab dich lieb deine Elinor.

Penny

Oh how beautiful those snowflakes are. Even though it is cold and snowing I feel you are lucky, we are getting the rain and sleet. Man we are so under water it is crazy. We can never dry up at all. and going out to the chickens tonite the water came up mid part of my shin. I agree with everyone else, I have never seen a snowflake look like that in real life. I think what we get here (if any) is totally just a frozen raindrop. and looks nothing like what yours does.
Oh and that wreath is absolutely gorgeous…..
Hope all is well with you and your chickens!
How is Duke?

Soooo beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing. Like you, I am not fond of winter precipitation. Your pictures make me wish it would snow here, just once.

The snowflakes are beautiful! We seldom see such pretty flakes - we usually just get frozen rain pellets.
I just love the wreath!

Those photos are GREAT! So very cool. Junior learned how to make the paper snowflakes at pre-school last week. I just LOVE all those tiny billions of pieces of paper everywhere.

Arent snowflakes so pretty when you really get to see them? Around here we get mostly ice storms….but every once in a while we get some “good” snow. Meaning snow that falls pretty and piles up kinda nice. That doesnt mean that I like snow. I dont much care for it….but when I can see it falling like that and Im inside nice and cozy…and know that I dont have to go outside…then its seems almost okay! Only problem with that is my little guy sees it and thinks that he needs to be out in it!!!! You see where Im going with this????
Your wreath is very pretty. I bet that was a fun time getting to make that.
