My dad loves to enter contests. He’ll fill out entry forms for any contest that is giving away something free. His local newspaper recently began printing entry forms to win a free scooter and I was not surprised to learn that my dad was clipping them, filling them out, and mailing them in on a fairly regular basis. What I was surprised to learn is that this free scooter campaign was to promote breast cancer awareness and, as a result, the scooter is pink. Bright pink. VERY bright pink. But this didn’t seem to bother my dad, and he continued filling out and submitting entry forms anytime he found them in the newspaper.
Much to the amazement of my entire family, my father WON the bright pink scooter. And if that’s not surprising enough, he actually rides the bright pink scooter. All the time. Everywhere.
Now a man with less self confidence might hesitate to ride a bright pink scooter. But my dad has never lacked in the self confidence department. He scoots around on the highways on his bright pink scooter in his tennis shoes with his flannel shirt flapping like nobody’s business. He’s even had people slow down as they pass him to take pictures of him on their cell phones. I’m not sure I could blame them:
Is he not just the most precious thing you’ve ever seen?
Rock on daddy. Don’t let anyone tell you pink is not your color.
I love you.

My Papaw on a pink scooter?? I am a little more keen in the fashion department so I wasn’t so sure about the red flannel shirt with the pink scooter…but I guess that just says more about my Papaw. He has enough confidence to ride it! It’s really not about the confidence. To him it is free transportation or in his words ” it was the right price” and he doesn’t care what anyone else thinks! So as my favorite aunt Penny says…My papaw does totally rock!!!!
Penny is my sister, so I must first tell you that she has always been filled with words that describe how she see’s the world. At times, each member of our family has been on the receiving end of her sometimes slightly exaggerated stories.
But, I have to say, she’s right on about this one. One of the things that I have always admired about my dad is that he really does not care what other people think of him. This has made him one of the smartest people I know. When we were young, before the days of throwing out something that didn’t work because it was cheaper to replace, we never got anything new. Broken clock, he fixed it. Broken blow dryer, he fixed it. He is self taught and filled with the knowledge needed to build a house or anything else he puts his mind to. He has a ton of common sense and loves to fish.
Now, as for the pink scooter, I never thought I’d see the day. I suggested he donate it to me since it was pink, and he explained to me how he had one of the coolest cars back in the 50′s painted pink and gray and how everyone loved it. He told me pink was one of his favorite colors. I teased him about it, but he proceeded to tell me the story about his pink and gray car and how it was the envy of every one who saw it. I told him I’d get him a pink t-shirt for Christmas. My daughter, Christina, threatened to buy him a pink helmet. He took our teasing him and stride and continued to do exactly what he intended to do. He picked up his pink scooter and took to the road. He told me he had a scooter when he was a young teen, so I think he’s doing what we all do as we grow older. Living out our second childhood!! You go dad. You’re way too cool for that scooter!!!
For any of you that have never had the pleasure of meeting any of this family, let me inlighten you. In my opinion they are SOLID GOLD. I know, I have lived next door to William & Lilly for nigh on 10 years, and have met the “Kids”. I am the one that submitted the photo and christen it the Pink Papaw Mobile.
I am proud to call these folks my friends, and an extended part of my family.
Love ya’ll
Kay

What a great guy your dad obviously was. And from Debra’s description, he sounds a lot like my daddy, too. He was a little older than yours, but lived by the same ideals. I think it’s fantastic he won the scooter!
