The Big Dig

Bernie and I worked hard at keeping up with shoveling and plowing as the snow was falling last Friday and Saturday. By the time it ended Saturday evening, the snow was about mid-thigh on me, the chickens refused to leave their coop, and the pups were having a hard time finding somewhere to potty. I dug a small path between the house and the chicken coop, but I only removed the top foot or so of snow because it was pretty firmly packed from my walking on it. The chickens really did not seem to like it, and this is as far as the would venture down it:

So, in order for the chickens and pups to have an area for roaming, Bernie plowed the area between the garage and the chicken run.

And I shoveled a small opening that led to the chicken run and, within only a few minutes, Pico brought a few ladies out into the cleared area.

That cleared area joins with our driveway.

And Bernie is at the end of it, where he’s been for quite a while, shoveling the last few feet of the driveway that hook up with the road that leads to the main road. Diesel and Dolly know this, and they want to go find him.

I had only intended to take a few pictures and head back inside, but I knew the pups had cabin fever, and I knew they really wanted to find Bernie, so around the corner and down the driveway we went.

Around the bend, and over the little creek.

And then back up, beside the old cabin.

And at the top of the hill, they saw him.

And I saw why he’s been down here so long.

I would say this has been the Big Dig of 2010, but I’m afraid to assume we won’t get anything worse. It’s only February. And we do have another storm heading here tomorrow night……..

Wish I would have put my chicken coops closer to the house instead of at the bottom of our hill!
    did you lose power?

  2. frugalmom says:

Wow! Bernie plowed them a nice big spot to walk out into! That was nice of him.
I love that pic of the pups running once they saw Bernie! They look so excited.
Im pretty sure that my little guy would have loved that great big hill of snow there at the end. In fact, I betcha he would have even helped shovel. :-)

Holy Snowly!!! And more to come. I love the pictures of the chickens and their tentative stroll. Our dog Nikki just loves to run in the snow. Hope that second storm was a little gentler on you. We heard DC got piled on.
Good weather for Soup and Snugglin.

  4. Kat says:

Oh my gosh! My back and shoulders ache just from looking at all that snow and thinking about all the effort of shoveling it!
Looks like we’re done with snow here in the northwest–I even took the studs off my car today. It’s too bad, though, ’cause we’re going to be water-short here this summer…

Lisa – No, we didn’t lose power, thank goodness! But I filled the bathtub with water so we could flush toilets if the electricity went out, and filled a bunch of gallon milk jugs with water to have for brushing teeth, washing hands and faces, and cooking with. Figures if I am actually prepared it wouldn’t happen ;) but I am NOT complaining!

Frugalmom – B did plow a really nice area for the animals – and they are all taking advantage of it! I bet that little guy would have been a great help around here. I may have even been able to talk him into helping with the cold door knob situation around here……. Can you just imagine what fun he would have had sliding down these hills? And the pups just love little guys. They’re really good with them. *sigh* You’re lucky to have such a great little guy.

OMG, the road snow plow plowed you guys in! I can’t believe that big mound of snow! Did Bernie ever get through it? I’ll bet it had big ice chunks in it too. EWWW!

Sorry we are sending more snow your way – it didn’t amount to much here, but I have a feeling it’s going to dump way more on you guys. I hope I’m wrong!!!

Loved the pics of your driveway. It DOES look rather long. :-)

  7. Jennifer says:

He seriously did that all by hand? Wow, am I impressed!!

  8. marmitetoasty says:

    snowblowing is cheating LMFAO hahahahaha

  9. Lisa says:

And yet another foot or more to top it all off tonight!
I’ve got to get our emergency woodpile dug out this morning!
Our tubs are full too. I need to move backup north to Michigan to get out of tnhis weather I guess.

Kat – I think this has been a kooky winter for all of us! We do NOT normally get this kind of snow around here…..

Oz Girl – Please keep your weather in your own yard! I’m tired of it roaming over here ;-) Yes, they are saying between 6 – 12 inches. It’s supposed to start this morning and go through tomorrow afternoon :( OH, and yes, Bernie finally did make it through the mountain of snow. And he’ll get to do it again here pretty soon…….

Jennifer – oh heavens no! He rigged up a plow blade on our Trail Wagon and he used that for the yard and driveway. But the plow is pretty small, so no way it could handle the mountain of snow at the end of the driveway. THAT part he did by hand!

Mel – no snow blower here. But if we did have one? I am so NOT above cheating!!!

  11. basicliving says:

Lisa – Ha! Moving back up north Michigan to get out of this weather is just too funny! And sadly, it’s true! I hope you don’t lose electricity. Stay warm!

  12. CeeCee says:

Oh my goodness! It’s pretty for a little while and then it probably starts to get on your nerves.
Hang in there and stoke the fire.

  13. Linda says:

Beautiful pictures, but if I were there doing all the shoveling I wouldn’t think so. Stay safe and warm.

  14. Cotton Lady says:

Wow, Penny!! and I’m complaining about my mud roads! I would be snowed in until spring up there! Such beautiful pictures, tho. Your puppies have grown into such beautiful furry friends.
Batten down the hatches, it is coming again and I’m afraid the one we’re getting Thursday may wind it’s way to you, too. Sorry about that!

  15. lisa says:

Whoa! I couldn’t imagine having all that snow around here. Though we have had the most snow around here in years. I mean for around this parts it is pretty bad. Schools are closed and then opened, our highway department kinda stinks, they just ride around and don’t plow the roads at all. But I have to say it is so beautiful to look at, my chickens won’t come out either. One of my RSL died suddenly last week, not sure of what, no signs of sickness, but just lethargic and i brought her inside and she died quite fast. Not sure if it is from the cold, cause we have definitely had freezing temps this year to.

But Bernie is such a sweetie to shovel that snow out for your chickens and pups.

    Stay warm and safe.

  16. basicliving says:

CeeCeeWith the exception of one week, we have had snow on the ground since the first weekend of December here. It is SO getting on my nerves now ;)

Linda – I think enjoying the beauty of snow through pictures is definitely the way to go!

Cotton Lady – thanks for the compliment on the pups. They are such a joy. And I think you may be right about sending more snow our way….. I’m hearing 5 inches. :(

Lisa – I don’t know if you remember, over the period of a year I lost 3 Hamburgs exactly as you described. Suddenly lethargic, and then just dead. I have no clue what happened. Very odd. I hope y’all are staying warm. This has been such a brutal winter!
