Style and High Fashion on the Homestead

We’ve been blessed with a couple of days of beautiful weather this week. It’s actually been in the 70s the past couple of days, and it’s supposed to stay that way through the weekend. Like most of you, the gift of warm weather after such a long, cold winter makes my body and soul begin aching for spring and it turns my thoughts to gardening. It’s much too early to get all excited about gardening, but it’s the perfect time to start working on adding the raised beds we so desperately need for the vegetable garden. It’s also the perfect time to start seeds inside – but I don’t have a place to start seeds here. At least I didn’t……

This week I finally took the plunge and ordered an 8X12 greenhouse. Building a greenhouse has been on “the list” for over a year, and I haven’t seen it inch anywhere closer to the top of that list, so I dipped into my piggy bank and ordered one. It arrived this week – in three boxes. This weekend will be spent digging out a flat spot in the yard with the backhoe, and assembling my new greenhouse. I am hopeful that by next weekend I will be starting seeds inside of it.

Thanks for all the kind notes asking about Bernie’s shoulder and wishing him well. I went with him to the orthopedic specialist Thursday. As it turns out, he apparently damaged his rotator cuff. We’re fairly certain this happened last October, as that was when he began having pain. Because his shoulder was in pain, he favored it for the past several months and it has resulted in a frozen shoulder. The good news is that he does not need surgery and can hopefully “un-freeze” his shoulder on his own,  possibly with the help of physical therapy. The bad news is that “un-freezing” it involves a great deal of pain. He simply has to force himself to move it to the point of pain, and then move it some more. But my man is nothing if not tough. He can handle it. Feel the burn, baby!

For those of you that have written expressing interest in chicken saddles, and no interest in making them on your own, I’ve agreed to make a few and sell them. You can chose from four quite stylish fabrics. Specify the size(s) (medium or large) that you want, send me $5.00 for each, and I’ll make and mail your order. I’ll even pick up the shipping. I’m just nice like that. Imagine your hens strutting around in one of these stunning saddles

Hens are very fashion conscious. Help your girls make their own fashion statement and be the envy of the barnyard.

And speaking of fashion – I decided to make a statement of my own. A few days ago I had 11 inches of hair cut off my head. And I’ve decided to embrace my age and let my gray grow in. I did add a few highlights in the hopes of making the gray look a little more chic.  I’m not sure I was entirely successful, but the chickens seem to like it. So does Bernie. The cats didn’t seem to notice. And the pups were very impressed

Ahhhhhh, puppy breath. Let’s try it again. Smile for the camera

That Dolly has the attention span of a gnat. Oh well, you get the idea. Hey, I just realized, the color in my hair is the perfect blend of Dolly and Diesel’s fur! How cool is that? We are definitely stylin’ on the homestead.

Penny

Love the hair, love the puppies, love the chicken saddles!!

And I would love progress pictures of your greenhouse!! I have a little bank account set up to save the money for one myself! But, I can’t decide what kind to get, how big, and whether or not I could assemble it myself.

    Great haircut, Penny!

I emailed you earlier to thank you for the CNN link, but the email bounced back for some reason. Looks like a very useful link. Thanks for that!

Those puppies are just adorable. How can anyone be in a bad mood with all that puppy love around?

    Have a good weekend!

  3. Lilla says:

Oh, by the way….I, too, would love to see pictures of the greenhouse when you get it put together. Do you mind sharing where you bought it?

    Thanks

Well, thank you LisaAlso! I will definitely post some pictures of the greenhouse setup. I am really *hoping* it’s as easy as they make it sound…. Stay tuned!

Hey Lilla – did the bounce back message give you any indication about why it didn’t go through? Let me know if it sounds like it’s on my end.

I ordered the greenhouse on-line, from Costco. I tried to copy and paste a link, but the link is about 10 lines long for some reason. If you go to http://www.costco.com and type 293485 into the search box, it’ll take you to the one I ordered. They were offering $300 off when I ordered. If you search for “greenhouse” you’ll get a page of all they offer, and some of them are still on special. You may want to read the “reviews” on them though – I ordered the one I did because the reviews were better than the smaller size – especially with regards to how it holds up to wind.

    Take care,
    Penny

Hey Charlotte – the hair is packaged and ready to ship out to Locks of Love on Monday.

I’m hoping to get my potatoes, radishes, lettuce, and other cool weather veggies in this week. I’ve gotta get some chicken wire around it though – to keep the chickens out!

Hope y’all have a nice couple of days off!

  8. Cotton Lady says:

Penny-love your hair! I’ve had mine short for some years now and would have it no other way. Have more to do than fool with hair in our west Texas winds! Yours looks great and seems puppies think so too.

I had 2 twenty by four feet long raised beds put in last fall and I finally got to plant some peas in them on Feb. 25th. Like you, I had to put chicken wire over the top as my kitty says “O, a new big litterbox!!!” Also, my dog loves the cool dirt on a warm day. I am excited about all the veggies to come, too. We’ve had some hot weather with very high winds, so don’t think I can have a greenhouse. Winter is to return next week tho.
    Take care. CottonLady

Cotton Lady! So good to hear from you. And I told Bernie that we put fence around the house to keep the wild animals from eating our veggies – and now we have to fence the veggies to keep the chickens/dogs/cats out of them! I hope to get peas, potatoes, etc. in this week. Depends on how much time this greenhouse consumes. We got the ground leveled for it today. We’ll see what we get accomplished tomorrow.

    Take care.,
    Penny

As my 3 yr old would say, Hubba Hubba. Great haircut! It looks fantastic. My FIL donated his hair to Locks of Love as well. Its a great program.

    A greenhouse? Lucky duck.

  11. Trixi says:

Oh, those puppies are so cute!!! We too are experiencing some glorious weather. I love it!! I also love that new hair do. I need one desperately. It’s just so hard to part with.

  12. Shirley says:

Your hair looks tres chic, Miss Penny ! We don’t have much use for chicken saddles in my neck of the woods (LOL), but they certainly make a fashion statement as well !

  13. basicliving says:

Thank you for the kind words, Trixi, Frugalmom, and Shirley. Lots of “new” stuff on the homestead these days. And the pups are getting so big! I took pictures of them this weekend and planned to post them, but that was sort of overcome by events when biddies started showing up!
