Pictures of Happiness

Today, this is what makes Bernie happy:

He and Tex fabricated the mounting on the Trail Wagon for the ATV snow plow Bernie had.

Just look at that wench

Let’s just hope we don’t have to use it anytime soon.

And here’s something that makes me happy:

Photobucket

Just look at that handsome boy.

And how about this cutie? She just melts my heart.

And do they come any better looking than that wirey, little Bobby Lee? Does he not make you want to kiss his feathers right off of him?

Photobucket

Bobby Lee doesn’t get too far from his Black Spanish hens. He’s got it pretty bad for those girls.

It doesn’t take much to make us happy. Good friends, cute chickens, a nice little snow plow…… and maybe a week of weather in the 70s. But I’m not complaining…… this week.

I have to agree all of the above is pure happiness.LOL

Do you grow your chickens to eat them, too?

  3. basicliving says:

No, I likely won’t be eating any of my chickens. I honestly thought I would when I first got them, but I grew too attached. I tell myself that if I bought some meat chickens and just threw out some feed to them each day, I could eat them. But I’m not convinced. My husband grew up on a farm and culling chickens was his chore for a while. One day I asked him if he could cull one of mine he told me no. So I asked him “But you grew up doing that. Why couldn’t you cull one of mine?” He said “Those were food. Yours are pets.” That sums it up for me exactly.

I can hunt and kill deer, rabbit, squirrels, etc. and I can clean it and cook it up with no problem at all. And as silly as it sounds, I just can’t bring myself to kill an animal I’ve raised. I know it’s weird and I don’t particularly like it. But it’s the truth.

Do you raise chickens to eat? Are they pets to you? I honestly admire people that can eat the meat they raise. I just don’t think I ever could.

Unfortunately, raising chickens isn’t allowed in my condo complex… ;)

But I wish I could. I dream of having enough land, someday, to have some chickens, pigs, cows, and a buffalo! ;)

My grandpa had chickens and all of the above, sans buffalo. After he died we had to go slaughter what we wanted to keep for food. My dad and uncle put the chickens on a stump and axed their heads off. Then they let them run themselves empty. One of them chased me….around a car and toward the house!!!

    Someday.

I hope your dream is one day realized. I was almost 50 years old before mine was! We bought our property several years before moving on it, and I always visualized chickens running around. My husband did not. It took a year or so of convincing, but I got my chickens. And he likes them a lot more than he ever thought possible. Now I want dairy goats. I’m working on him about that. My parents have goats, and my husband knows how good they are about escaping any fencing and how destructive they can be when they do that. So do I – but we’re here all the time and would know pretty quickly if they were out and eating the garden, or standing on his pickup – right? I’ll wear him down – sooner or later ;-)

But….I do have a hydroponic garden!

    Here are some pictures!

How cool is THAT??? I love it! Very, very nice. And your dog is really gorgeous. Boxer?

  8. DJK says:

We don’t really know… he found us. But we think he’s Pit/Rhodesian Ridgeback/boxer mix or something. we have no idea.
