Pickles Pickles Pickles

July 2nd, 2010

Vegetable gardens in this area are having a tough go of it this year. Too cold, too hot, and now a drought. A few days ago I wandered out to check on the cucumbers and was very pleasantly surprised to find several were ready to be picked. 15 pounds worth of them, to be exact.

See those long, zucchini looking things? Those are Chelsae’s Prize - English cucumbers that my sweet blog buddy, Becky, sent me seeds for. I have to tell you, Chelsae’s Prize is definitely a winner. I will be saving seeds from those babies. They are prolific producers, and the cucumber is very mild and crisp. I used these to make hamburger chips, and the rest to make dill spears.

The cucumbers plants are loaded with blooms and baby cukes, so I’m fairly certain we are going to have enough pickles to get us through to next season. We’re also eating at least one cucumber salad a day. I’m praying our tomatoes do half as good this year. That remains to be seen.

Oh man! My cucumber plants are still just itty bitty things…I cant wait to taste a fresh cucumber :-)

I was looking at my journal from last season and this time last year(in IL) we were already getting pickling cukes….Every gardening season is so different.

Im gonna have to stock up on my bread and butters again.

I made my first batch of cucumber soup… heaven!
Hopefully I’ll be canning salsa this year…. only cherry tomatoes getting ripe thus far.

Penny, your cukes look mah-va-lush!! :) We got our garden in rather late, so we are only getting radishes right now. I think the cukes will be next. The plants are getting big and are starting to put out tendrils. There are two small tomatoes on our plants, but the tomato plants look like they are doing well so far, so I’m hoping for a good harvest. I have canning plans on the horizon. I’ve never canned before, so this is going to be great fun!! :-)

You have beautiful cucumbers. I got about four or five off my vines before they dried up. I haven’t made pickles in several years. Maybe next year I’ll have enough to pickle.

Have you ever had pickled squash Penny? I used to pickle them when the boys were little, it was the only way I could get them to eat squash. I pickled some this year alog with cuckes. I made hot sweet pickles that we ate before I could say I’ve pickled them. This is the first year in a long time I’ve had a garden that made anything.
    Your looks great!
    Love ya!

I did some canning last summer and still have some leftover. It was a heck of a lot of work. Yours look wonderful. I’ll bet B. loves having them around to snack on.

Oh my goodness those are PURDY! I don’t think I will get any cukes this year (dangit) really fighting the heat, but I have loads of tomatoes that should ripen in the next few weeks so will have sauce and salsa coming out my ears.
    Wanna trade???

Of course the cucumbers are the best, its cos they are English lol

We have had not for months proper hot sunny (unknown in England) week upon weeks of brill weather, with just the odd overcast day….. and all veggies have taken off and have gone MENTAL over here…..

Im so enjoying my little allotment….. even though its little…
