One Lucky Boy

If you keep up with me on Facebook, you may recall that last week I posted that I was looking for a home for a cute little Phoenix cockerel.

This guy narrowly escaped freezer camp a few weeks ago. He was spared for two reasons 1) He was really too little to eat and 2) he’s a full bred Phoenix. I really love my Phoenix hens and roosters. Not only are they pretty, they have very nice dispositions. I was really hoping we could find him a nice home. And that is exactly what we did.

When my friend, Charlotte, read my post on Facebook, she immediately wrote to tell me if I couldn’t find a home for the Phoenix cockerel, she would take him. Charlotte has wanted chickens for a very long time, and she somehow convinced Tex to agree to this cockerel. I wrote Charlotte back right away and said “Consider him yours.” She named him Feathers.

Bernie and I went over to deliver Feathers, and help work on the new coop and chicken yard that would be Feathers’ new home. When we got there, everything was well under way.

Within no time, Charlotte and I had the chicken walking plank ready to go, and Tex had constructed the sliding chicken door.

Charlotte tiled the floor of the coop. I am not kidding.

Tex went in to install the roost. But there was a slight problem. Tex is a little bigger than a chicken.

But he figured out a way to make it work.

Just look at these new digs!

Charlotte put the litter down, and we installed Feathers. He immediately showed his approval by scratching around happily.

The guys quickly closed in the chicken run.

And Feathers was allowed outside to check out his new yard.

He looks pretty darn happy in his new home, doesn’t he?

I can’t tell you how happy I am that Charlotte took this little cockerel. I had hoped to find him a good home and I am just tickled that I found him the perfect one.

I have learned to never say “never” on the homestead. I never thought I’d let my hens hatch out babies. I never thought I’d cull one of my chickens. I never thought I’d eat one of my chickens. And I never thought I’d give one of my chickens away.

Hmmmmm. Following that logic, I never thought I’d win the lottery either. So maybe, just maybe, Feathers won’t be the only lucky one around here!

PS – Thank you Tex and Charlotte for bringing Feathers into your lives and providing such a wonderful home for him. Oh, and thanks for letting me use your camera and sending me all the pictures.

I’m really excited for her, CeeCee. And the hens should be there this weekend – Rhode Island Reds! I think Feathers is going to be very, very happy.

This post made me smile. Especially seeing the pic of Charlotte laying tile in the coop. Already shes going the extra mile for that sweet, little roo. And then Tex’s foot hanging out of the coop door…that was funny to me….I hope he got out okay! But look what hes gone thru to get a roost in there for Feathers. That was very nice of him.

I love that you and Bernie went over there to help them with the coop and run. That had to mean a lot to them and I bet it was fun, too.

So happy that the little roo was saved from freezer camp and even happier that he found such a great home to someone that has been waiting so long to have a flock of her own. Congrats to Charlotte on her new roo. I just know she will take great care of him!

Just wanted to stop in and say hello. It seems you guys have been busy as a bee. The dogs look well. Give them a hug for me please.

We got a little bit of bad news, I would like to ask for your prayers and your readers prayers. We got a 30 day notice to move. The land lords health has been on decline for a while. Now his kids have say so over his dealings. They want us and all our animals out. I don’t know what we are going to do, one thing is for sure. If I have to live somewhere in a tent that is what we will do if that means our animals will be with us.

If anyone is looking to adopt a dog or a cat please see the our animals for adoption page at http://www.ourcritters.net . We can deliver to NO VA. Thanks everyone.

Frugalmom – it makes me smile too! I’m really happy for Charlotte – and for Feathers. Bernie helped with the fence, but I really didn’t do much. Charlotte was so excited and happy she was buzzing with activity to get that coop finished!

Charlotte – Feathers is definitely at home now! And he really has a great one. I bet he’s going to love being the king of the flock around there. Can’t wait to see pictures of him with his hens this weekend!

Betty – I am SO sorry to hear that. I know this is an extremely stressful time for you. You, your family, and all your foster pets will be in my thoughts, heart, and prayers. Please let me know how things go.

Oh that is fantastic to hear. Now is that Bobby Lee (the one that is giving Duke a hard time). maybe not… I saw your ad on Backyard chickens on Tuesday, but haven’t had time to email you. I am glad to see someone will love him as you did. Feathers is one lucky roo and gonna be so spoiled. LOL

How is Duke doing? How are your mealworms doing? I sent you an email and haven’t heard from you so I know you are super busy.
    take care

    Lisa

Lisa – I didn’t answer your email? I went back through my inbox and I’m sure I answered each you sent. I apologize if I missed one! Duke is doing ok – his foot looks pretty good and not nearly as swollen – but there is still a little swelling left. I just don’t know if we’ll ever kick this. The mealworms are starting to hibernate. When we start using the wood stove, I’ll bring them out to warm them up a bit. How are yours? And your chickens? If you send me another email, I’ll be sure to answer it!

What a great new home! Enjoy, Charlotte!

That’s one fine looking coop and run! So happy Feathers was spared from freezer camp! Charlotte, you and Tex remind me of me and my husband…I can definitely see me laying linoleum and Neal lying on his back in the coop to get the job done! And Penny, what good friends you and B are for finding Feathers a new home and helping out with building his new digs!

Enjoy your new family, Charlotte. I know they will be well loved.
