Honest Scrap

July 8th, 2009

Angie from over at Home Grown presented me with the Honest Scrap Award. I don’t normally like to do these sorts of things, but I really like Angie’s blog and think a lot of her. If you’ve never visited Home Grown, I suggest you do so. It’s chalk full of information, humor, and great “how to” articles.

OK, so here are the instructions that came with it:

  • “The Honest Scrap” award is not one to hold all to your self but it must be shared!
  • First, the recipient has to tell 10 true things about themselves in their blog that no one else knows.
  • Second, the recipient has to pass along this prestigious award to 10 more bloggers.
  • Third, Those 10 bloggers all have to be notified they have been given with this award.
  • Those 10 bloggers that receive this award should link back to the blog that awarded them “The Honest Scrap’ award.

Well, I honestly can’t think of 10 things about myself that NO ONE else knows, but I can think of 10 things that many of you (other than my family) may not know about me. So I’m going to share those.

1. I was in the U.S. Air Force from 1978 - 1982. I completed Tech School in Pensacola, Florida after boot camp in San Antonio, Texas and was stationed in San Vito, Italy for 1 1/2 years, and then finished up at NSA at Fort Meade, Maryland. I had one of those “My job was so secret even I didn’t know what I did” jobs, so I can’t talk much about it. But I loved being in the Air Force and I’ve never regretted it. It was a defining experience in my life and taught me many life lessons that I carry with me today.

2. I am a Master Gardener. Seriously. I took the course and passed with flying colors many years ago in another county. I’ve not been certified in the county where I currently reside. I don’t share that often because of my embarrassment of never being able to remember the name of a flower. Plus, everyone else’s gardens look better than mine.

3. I was born in Savannah, Georgia. Although my father was in the military while I was growing up, due to his “unaccompanied” tours to Viet Nam and his tours at Fort Stewart, I rarely lived outside of Georgia. We did live in Germany twice. When I was between the ages of about 3 - 6 years old, I spoke fluent German. I don’t share that very often because now my German is limited to knowing how to ask where the bathroom and Bahnhof are and singing the “Eins, zwei, g’suffa” song. Oh, and I can order a beer. Which is required before singing the “Eins, zwei, g’suffa” song.

4. When I was a child I had a pet mouse named PoPo. I loved that little mouse and used to beg my mother to let me take him to church with me. He was a little gray thing and very sweet. Everyone loved him. I cried for days when he died.

5. My little sister passed away in 1994 at the age of 31 from Cystic Fibrosis, and I’ve never really recovered from it. I list this as number 5 only because it’s something I still have a difficult time discussing. She was full of piss and vinegar, had a will of steel and a wonderful sense of humor. She continues to be an inspiration to me today. I still dream about her and wake up crying.

6. I don’t care for any orange vegetable that is cooked. I love raw carrots, but do not like them cooked. I also don’t care for cooked sweet potatoes, pumpkin, etc. If it’s orange and cooked, I won’t usually eat it and if I do, I hold my nose.

7. I’m a sap and cry at those touching cat food commercials. I also cry at those touching dog food commercials. I cry during every movie/show I watch if an animal does something cute or gets hurts. I don’t watch a lot of “Chick Flicks” because I cry during those too. But not as much as I cry over those touching cat food commercials.

8. And just to prove what a sap I am, my family went fishing when I was about 10 and I got so excited when I hooked a fish that I yanked him out of the water so hard that the force slammed him to his death on the boat ramp. I cried for days about it and, in an attempt to console me, my family held funeral services for the little fish - complete with prayers and everything. We buried him in the backyard, where PoPo would one day end up.

9. I once wore a pair of mismatched shoes to work with a dress. One shoe was black with a high heel, and the other was black with no heal at all. It took me four hours to figure out why I was walking funny. And no one ever said a word. Jerks.

10. As much as I appreciate Angie thinking of and “tagging” me for this, I really don’t like these “Tell people some things they don’t know about you” deals. I’m a pretty boring person and I think most people have figured that out without needing even more proof!

Hello? *tap* *tap* *tap* Are you still awake? OK, good. Because I want to tell you the bloggers I’m going present the Honest Scrap Award to. And I have to tell you, just picking 10 was difficult for me. I follow so many blogs and they are all so good. Anyway, here are the 10:

NatureNut4
Making it Our Home While Here
Me and My Chickens
Me and My Girls
Physical Possum
Rhymes With Vanilla
Sparrow Haven
The Delaware Curmudgeon
Fancyin’ the Farmlife
My Little Bit of Heaven

OK, and here is what I’d like to ask you to do - please visit each of these blogs and take a look around. Find a post you’d like to comment on in each and let them know Penny from Basic Living sent you. Add a link back to my blog if you can. You’re going to be doing yourself a favor by reading some good stuff, and you’re going to do each of these bloggers a favor because bloggers LOVE comments. Love, love, love comments! We just love to know that we’re not typing into cyberspace. Nothing makes a blogger happier than to log in and find comments on a post. So, please, comment!

Bee Free,

Penny

Well how lovely to have received that award! Thanks!! I received the same award a bit ago, but just for fun, will post 10 more things folks don’t know about me.

  2. basicliving Says:

Aw CeeCee, you’re such a good sport! I was tickled when I saw Angie listed my blog. Then I almost threw up when I realized I had to post 10 things about myself! I think I’d get diarrhea if I had to do that twice. Thanks for accepting it. I love your blog and had to give the award to you.And now I’m off to find your other list of ten things ;-)

  3. christina Says:

My favorite Aunt in the world…I read the entire blog and actually wanted you to know that I have always known you were the best at a lot of things…it kind of runs in the family! I never get tired of hearing your stories…I just prefer to hear with my ears not read with my eyes! Love ya!

  4. basicliving Says:

My little Stinkie! I’m proud of you for reading the whole thing! I’ll test you later ;-) And your old Aunt Penny isn’t the best at anything, but you might figure I’d done a thing or two in my fffff….fffiiifff…. well, in all my years. Most if which you may NEVER know about ;-) The sun rises and sets on you. I love you.

  5. Yo Mama Says:

Hi my sweet Penny. I really enjoyed your blog about 10 things no one knows about you. I knew them all, but loved hearing them again. You’re very special to all of us and we love you very much. Hugs and kisses to you and Bernie. Your old Mamma

  6. Brent Says:

I gotta tell ya Penny…you bring a smile and a tear to my eye every week.

One of the ten things you forgot to list was your paranoia about thinking that you will burn the house down if you leave the toaster plugged in.

I still get a big O’l Grin on my face when I remember that…and rub my shoulder where you punched me for kidding you about that way back when.

    Love ya Hun!!

    BP

  7. basicliving Says:

Oh my - my very own mother actually commented on one of my blog post! This is truly a red letter day. The woman’s been reading my blog for years, but never commented - she prefers to talk to me about them on the phone. Which is wonderful, but a blog comment…. a real, true, blog comment! This is surely every blogger’s dream.

Mama - You’re the best. You really are. But I do blame you for all the crying I do. I got that from you, no doubt. I like to think I got the best of both you and daddy. One of the best things about you is your sweet, gentle, compassionate heart. That’s the part that makes me cry at cat food commercials. It’s also the part that has helped me though much of life’s challenges. It offsets that outspoken, take-charge part that daddy contributed. That’s the part that helped me do well in the military, and has served me well in my career. Perfect balance ;-) Just like the two of you.

I love you, Mama. You made my day by commenting on my blog. But now, what will we talk about tomorrow on the phone?

  8. basicliving Says:

Holy crap! Brent! Wow, to think I really almost didn’t even do this post - and here it brings all the loves of my life right out into the open!

I’ll never forgive you and Bernie for the toaster prank. Never in a million years. And I’ll never stop loving you. Never in a million years.

Oh, and watch what you say on here buddy. You and Shari have at least HALF the stories I will NEVER tell my niece Christina ;-)

You’ll never know how much we love and miss you. And BACON!!!!

  9. Brent Says:

Penny Wrote: “Oh, and watch what you say on here buddy. You and Shari have at least HALF the stories I will NEVER tell my niece Christina ;-)”

    LMAO….”That is not your Putter”!!!!

    ;-) ;-)

  10. Angie Says:

I find you very interesting. I am from near Ft. Gordon, Ga. I will always be a Georgia Peach as long as I live. I, too, am extremely teary eyed depending on the subject. My husband is an AF brat. :)

  11. basicliving Says:

Brent - OHMYGAWD! You are totally bringing back blasts from the past. Bernie and I are sitting here laughing and, naturally, I am sitting here crying at the same time. Lordy, I miss you.

Angie - Once a Georgia Peach, always a Georgia Peach. There is no way to get around that. I always believed I’d end up back in Georgia. But my Bernie has roots down to China here in Virginia - and he also has the keys to my heart. *sigh* Good thing I love Virginia!

  12. Shari Says:

Brent shared this with me and I was LMAO. I think we could only add the creative Pictionary collaborations (cheating). Thanks for sharing. We had some good laughs just talking about it. Now I have to help Brent find his Jim Stafford collection.

  13. basicliving Says:

Well, as I live and breathe - Shari! Lordy, I’m happy I posted this one. But we never cheated girlfriend. We were just “creative”, remember? I hesitate to tell Bernie that Brent is looking for his Jim Stafford collection. Bernie has his “on ready” at all times - and I do NOT want to give him reason to start playing that! We’ll be up all night - watching him attempt to moon walk as well as Brent ;-) I love ya girl. Why do we have to live so far apart? But maybe that’s the reason we’re all still alive!

  14. Shari Says:

It is so good to hear from you. I agree, perhaps we are still alive because of not living closer. Brent and I just had a discussion about the moonwalking. He said Bernie never moonwalked, but he also insisted that we cheated. He’s getting confused in his old age. I read your website in amazement, but not surprise. If anyone could do it, you two could. Keep in touch a little more and I will too.

  15. frugalmom Says:

Dang. This post brought all kindsa people out of the woodwork. :) Its like a big ol family reunion in here!

Thank you so much for the award, Penny. That was very sweet of you.

Im pretty sure that I wont get nearly the response when I go to post my blog in acceptance of this award…..sooooo…maybe Ill just pass on the whole thing…;)

  16. basicliving Says:

Frugalmom - I know! Right? I’m still amazed.

But come on, Frugalmom, don’t be like that. I really NEED you to do this so I can commit some things to memory to throw out at ya when you least expect it. Only I have no memory - but I could at least reference the post ;-) Honestly, I understand if you don’t want to do it. I didn’t really want to either. And I’m late to CeeCee’s blog, but I now see that she gave you this very award in June, and you ignored her to0. I don’t feel so bad now. Hug Darby for me.

  17. Mark Pegram Says:

    Penny,

Congratulations on the award! I have been a fan for two years now and your blog makes me desire the life of freedom that you have created. I do business there in the valley periodically and it is a beautiful place. Through your inspiration I have started a blog about surviving vitamin D deficiency. This tragic pandemic is taking the lives of hundreds of thousand of Americans and millions of people worldwide every year. It is cathartic to write. Thanks for your inspiration. Go into the sun with the least amount of clothes possible so that you do not get locked up! Your sister was wonderful in guiding me through my recovery as my personal trainer. What a beautiful family! Please comment on my blog if you have the time. Unfortunately it is a serious topic.

  18. basicliving Says:

Mark! It’s so good to see you hear. I appreciate that you’ve followed my ramblings for so long. It’s made me smile when you emailed me about my posts in the past - and I’m happy you came here to share your comments.

I am indeed a blessed and fortunate person to have such a wonderful family. They have always been the glue of my life, and they keep me grounded. Not an easy feat - just ask ‘em ;-)

I am off to check out your blog. Sounds like a good excuse to run around here nekkid - not that I need the excuse, I’ve done that before. I know, I know, TMI!!! OK, enough of this. I’m off to read your blog now.

  19. Lilla Says:

Yep, just like one big family reunion. I don’t know any of you people and I’m crying just reading all your stories and feeling the love you have for each other!

And Penny, I hate these dang meme things, too, but because I like you so much, I’ll participate…this time.

    Hugs!

  20. basicliving Says:

Aw Lilla - that is so sweet. I cried through the dang comments too! Sorry for the big public love-fest ;-)

Thank you for accepting the award. As much as I didn’t want to do, I ended up enjoying it. I hope you will too.

  21. Jocelyn Says:

Thanks for the award Penny. I think. LOL It was great fun and I did enjoy the task and passing it along. I’m looking forward to visiting all the blogs you listed!

  22. basicliving Says:

Jocelyn!! Thank you so much for playing along! I can’t wait to read what you wrote. I’m off to do that right now.

  23. Julie Says:

I don’t know what to say…..words escape me somehow….I just feel so…so honored:-) I would like to thank you my dear “sweet” cousin…without you this award would not be possible:-)
    I still Love you anyway,
    Julie =+)
I also love your blog and I’m still learning more and more about you every time I read it.

  24. Julie Says:

One more thing….This is me…slow…procrastinating..side tracking…me, I hope you realize that it maybe a week before I get through all of this…I mean I have to find 10 bloggers to send this to PLUS read the 10 that you gave it to….LEAVE comments!!!(with me letters) and then list 10 things about myself. All of this in between working here at my zoo..You might want to make that a week to a month;-)

  25. basicliving Says:

OK first a disclaimer - Julie is indeed my cousin ( the BEST cousin, ever!) but I promise you, she is the only member of my family whose blog I listed. Honestly. She’s the only other member of my family that even has a blog. In fact, I don’t think most of our family have any clue what a blog is. Seriously.

And Julie, that’s a great acceptance speech. I almost cried. Now get busy writing your 10 things. I can’t wait to read them! ;-)

  26. frugalmom Says:

You are totally at 25 comments now. Wait. Make that 26. :)

And really? Youre gonna give me a hard time about not weighing the peaches and the brownie pizza….and THEN not leave a comment on my Honest Crap..(oops, I mean Scrap) Post???? How does that work?

  27. basicliving Says:

You TOTALLY tricked me on that, Frugalmom. And you snuck it in while you didn’t think I was looking.

I read every word and I got a good chuckle. I still can’t believe you aren’t outgoing or adventurous. Those really boggle my mind. But I did know you have perfectly, beautiful straight teeth - I just didn’t know you wore braces. I’m jealous of that smile, none the less.

  28. Nicole Says:

Heyy! Thanks so much for linking me! I’m gonna get on that post!

  29. basicliving Says:

Hey Nicole - you were all over that! I just zipped over to your blog to read it. Fun reading your 10 things!
