Homemade Fabric Softener
Homemade Fabric Softener not only works, it’s inexpensive and it leaves your clothes fresh and clean. Here’s an easy recipe for you:
1 cup baking soda
5 cups water
6 cups vinegar
essential oil (amount depends on you – start with 20 drops or so)
First a word of caution: mixing baking soda and vinegar WILL result in a chemical reaction. If you’re not careful, the result can be very similar to violently shaking a can of soda and then quickly popping the top on it. I suggest using a large bucket to mix this softener and then transfer the liquid to another container when you are finished. I use an old fabric softener bottle I washed out.
In a large bucket, combine the baking soda and the water. Stir it around a bit. Don’t worry that the baking soda doesn’t completely dissolve – it will in a few moments….. Now, SLOWLY and carefully add the 6 cups of vinegar. I slowly add one cup and then stir a little, then add another and stir, and so on until all the vinegar is added. It will fizz and bubble up, but if you add the vinegar slowly, it will be just fine. Add the essential oil. Now gently stir until all the baking soda has dissolved. Pour the softener into a container with a lid for storage.
Be sure to shake well before using and open carefully – it may get a bit fizzy on you the first few times. Use 1/2 to 1 cup of softener for your washer’s rinse cycle. I fill the softener cup in my washer full of homemade softener – it holds about 1/2 cup. My washing machine is a front load washer, and doesn’t use much water. For washers that use a lot of water, 1 cup of softener may work better for you.
