Hamburg Hussy

For over two weeks, I’ve been coming up short on my head count each night when I tuck the chickens in. And a few times I found a Hamburg hen clucking softly and pacing by the closed chicken run first thing in the morning when I went to let the other chickens out for the day. I knew that little hussy was broody and setting on a nest somewhere, but I could not find it. Well, she came into the run this afternoon while I was tending to the waterer and feeder, and I waited her out and followed her when she headed back in the woods.

And I found her clutch. There must be about three dozen eggs in it.

She’s way too small to cover all those eggs. I have no idea how many will hatch.

Well, there goes my plan of limiting the number of chicks this year……

Look at this cute bench Bernie made out of the leftover deck material.

It’ll be a nice bench to sit on and watch that broody Hamburg with all the little babies she’s sure to bring up in the yard in the next week or so. Hussy.

Nice bench, B. did a great job. I am not going to say a word about that hen, But Tex want to know were in the heck did she get all them eggs? Sorry I had to ask.

I love the bench! Are you and Bernie ready to movie over here yet???? I am not allowing anyone to brood right now. When this incubator empties that is it for me for this year. Want a turkey for Thanksgiving? You know you do.

    Really cute bench. Great idea!

She’s going to be so cute, leading the chicks around. I was lucky. Our broody hen ended up only hatching 2.

How sweet she didn`t want anybody taking those eggs, she is going to be a good mom.

Love that bench. Your man is very talented (not to mention hard-working)!!

Your Hamburg is absolutely gorgeous! What’s her disposition like? I always worry about the thinner breeds being high-strung so I’ve not had many. I’ve only had 1 Hamburg (A Silver Spangled Hamburg) before and it turned out to be a rooster which we kept since he was pretty laid-back.

In a previous post, the comment must have been lost but I was commending the workmanship on your deck — beautiful work. Are you able to find the time to enjoy relaxing there yet? lol

Charlotte – the other hussy hens lay eggs for her to set on! I really can not win…..

Angie – I don’t dare talk turkey with Bernie right now….. he’s still not finished with the goat barn!

Faith – I really do love the chicks – it’s the extra roos I’m not crazy about dealing with…..

SVB – thank you! I’ll be sure to post pictures.

Cristy – I hope she’ll be a good mama. As tight as she’s setting on those eggs, I think there’s a good chance of it!

    Kat – Me either!

Frugalmom – I really don’t want to discuss these odds…… dang those roosters!

Oz Girl – I agree. I don’t know what I’d do without him!

    Julie – Thanks, cuz! (((hugs)))

Marmy – Unfortunately B is the only one. But if he did have a brother, I’d send him straight to you :) XXXOOO

LynnS – My Hamburgs are indeed very high strung. But they are fun little girls and keep me laughing – when I’m not ready to stew them for being such fussers. They do carry on something fierce. And they are not dependably good mamas. It’s 50/50 with them. But when they decide to be good mamas, they are the fiercely protective and really quite excellent.

We are really happy with the deck, and we do find time to enjoy relaxing on it! We try to spend a little time there each evening with the pups. And I’m always thankful we added it!
