First Peeps of 2010

baby chicks

*sigh* Nothing says Spring like baby chicks. I could just kiss their beaks right off of them.

AWWWWWWWWWW That’s my baby!!!! They are doing really well. Peeping away. They won’t stop eating! I am trying to show them how to drink, but they don’t do it unless I do it. Is that normal?

Just precious. They may just not be thirsty! They are still very young and don’t have to have water quite yet. If you’ve dipped their beaks a couple of times, they’ll probably be just fine. They just need to know where the water is. They’ll get the hang of it pretty quickly and know where to go when they are thirsty. Enjoy those babies!

Baby chicks can stick like velcro to a mama hen! I have picked a broody up that has babies underneath her, and found NO babies at all. Those little peeps snuggle up in her so tight I have to shake them out. It is truly amazing. I am in awe every time a broody hatches out babies. Such an awesome thing. Baby peeps really do mean spring to me.

These peeps went to Lisa. She’ll raise them with her children and learn all about baby chickens. It was hard to let them go – but I know they went to a good home.

I’ve always loved when they peek out from under mom’s wings and then disappear again. For having such tiny brains, the hens are great mothers.
    Enjoy the babies. :)

That is a fantastic picture. She looks so cute peeking out from under the feathers.

  9. Lisa says:

    Soooooooo sweet!
I’ve had a broody underneath the coop for a few weeks but I can’t get close enough to peek so I guess I won’t know if there are any peeps until they start moving around.

AWW! I just love the sign of spring. I have a broody White Jersey Giant that has 8 eggs under her now. They are supposed to hatch any day now. She had some issues with the girls pushing her out of her nesting box. Well she is determined and I have moved her into the garage. We are getting ready to buy a ‘broody house’ just for this purpose. That way noone will bother with them. And the then will have a place for birds that need to be separated from the rest of the flock. I am so excited. I just hope I don’t have an overload of roosters.

Glad things are looking up on the homestead.

Awe. I am so in jealous of you and your new babies… my chickens are still trying to get it figured out and I can’t wait much longer. What did you do to make them hurry up? :o )

  15. Amy says:

I agree…nothing says spring better than baby bitties! We have 5 Serama babies that hatched last week. I just love our Seramas!

  16. ohiofarmgirl says:

Love to see those babies! I went out yesterday and it was cool so all our peeps were under their “momma” (a turkey hen) and four were sitting on her shoulders! We’ve got all kinds of peepin’ going on – dont you LOVE spring?

  17. Paul says:

Hee Hee! Great photo! “We didn’t get much sleep but we sure had fun in Grandma’s feather bed”!

  18. What a cute picture! Love it!

  19. Oz Girl says:

*sigh* what a sweet photo!! Hubby put “my” chickens on hold. *pout* Says we just don’t have the $$ to get the fencing and all that, and with our coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, skunks, you name it, we have ‘em, yes, we’ll need some protection, and he’s right, we need to wait til I get that job to help out. Such a paradox… I have the time now!!
