Double Your Pleasure…..

Eeeeeep! Look what we finally got this morning.

double yolk egg

A double yolk egg! I had all but given up that I would ever find one of these. I am totally all about yolk in an egg. It’s the best part. So I almost peed my pants when Bernie called me into the kitchen this morning to see this beauty. It was all the more surprising because it came from a small, skinny egg. We have three girls that lay very small slender eggs, and the yolks are very large. Today one of them had a double yolk. Yay! Because it wasn’t really unusual in it’s appearance before he cracked it, we didn’t take any pictures. But I took some pictures this afternoon of two that are pretty similar.

eggs

The rounder eggs both weigh in as large eggs. The two skinny eggs both weigh in as small. And the egg that had the double yolk looked very much like those two skinny eggs.

This was definitely double the pleasure for me. I savored every bite and chewed with a smile.

  1. How exciting! I’m sure that was one delicious egg. Hope you find some more double yolks.

Oh how I love to get double yokers. I haven’t gotten one in a long time. But some my older girls have been on vacation which is fine with me. They need a break and I am still averaging over a dozen each day. I switched them back the grower/finisher to give them a break and not force them to lay as many eggs. I was gettin 2 dozen+ each and every day. It was crazy, I will probably never put them back on the laying food again. It has the same protein and other nutrients in there and it isn’t hurting them.

I love my girls so much:))

We are supposed to get more snow this week. BLAH!!! but we have nothing like you guys have. Bless You!!

He made a wish, didn’t he? You must always make a wish when you crack an egg because double yolks mean whatever wish you made will come true.
We had a hen that laid double yolks more often than she laid single yolks, but she became food for the red-tailed hawk. Maybe they’re not so lucky after all…

    Ha! double the pleasure….doublemint gum.

But okay. Those *are* slender looking eggs. I hardly ever get double yolks….and no, not just because I dont have my own chickens. My farmer that we get eggs from…those eggs are so big sometimes that I cant close the carton all the way….but seldom a double yolk do I get.

Wait, tho….does this mean that Bernie was making you breakfast, again?

  5. Oz Girl says:

How cool is that! However, I’d be happy just to be plucking my very own eggs out of our coop every morning… guess I need to get some chickens to do that, huh?! :)

Congrats, Penny. I was almost drooling looking at that egg! I love doubles, too. Am planning on gettin some chicks this spring. I’ve read that you don’t put them in a chicken house until they start feathering, right? Also, about how long will it be before they start laying? I grew up with chickens around but must admit that I didn’t pay attention to those details and that was over half a century ago! Oops almost told my age! I’m excited to become a ‘hen mom’!

SVB – it really is eggciting! And now I am only eating skinny eggs :)

Lisa – Wow – your girls are really laying for you! We are getting about 14 eggs a day, which isn’t nearly as many as I would expect from this number of hens…. but it is plenty and I’m thankful. I’m with you though – I don’t add extra light in the winter or do anything to force a better egg production. I like have healthy, happy hens… even if more than half are free loaders ;)

Kat – I’m so sorry you lost your little double yolk layer :( And we didn’t know about wishing before you crack an egg…. Bernie said he’s gonna start doing that from now on. Thanks!

Frugalmom – you always pick up on these things. *sigh* OK, I admit. Bernie is the sole cooker of breakfast around here. He cooks breakfast seven times a week. And he cooks lunch 5 days a week. I cook supper pretty much every night, and lunch on the weekends. BUT….. I bring home the bacon dammit! That counts for something….. right?

Oz Girl – You SO need chickens! I think you’ll be surprised at how much you can love chickens. And their eggs. But really? Mostly the chickens.

Cotton Lady – You’re getting your chickens???? YAY!!!! I kept mine inside in a brooder until they were two weeks old. They can’t keep their own body temp before two weeks old. Then I put them in the coop with a heat lamp. If they are cold, they will get under the heat lamp. If they are not cold, the can get away from it. They will start laying around 20 – 24 weeks. I’ve had some lay at 18 weeks. And I’ve had some that didnt’ lay until 26 weeks or so. It just depends….. I’m so excited for you! Please send me some pictures.

We called double yolk eggs Gradpa eggs. Alot of folks called them that in the area that I grew up in here in Iowa. We also would pick eggs instead of gathering eggs. Most of the farmers in the area were Swedish and we kept alot of the Old World ways. John

  9. basicliving says:

John – picking eggs is like picking vegetables. I like that! But I wonder why double yolkers are called Grandpa eggs?

  10. Donna says:

I aso got double yokes today. Its gift each time we crack one open.

  11. Katey says:

Skinny eggs and double yokes! Now that girl is one smart chicken. High production and easy on the manufacturing equipment. :)

  12. I am so happy I found your blog. I first read your “Where we started” and “How we’re getting there” pages. I must say that it feels like you took the words right out of my mouth. My husband and I have had these desires for a while now, but had no idea there was an actual “modern homestead movement”. This is incredible and I thank you so much for the information you’re providing. It’s really appreciated.

  13. CeeCee says:

I could always count on double yolks from one of my hens, her first summer laying. They were ginormous eggs, but oh so yummy!

  14. I love all the different eggs. We haven’t gotten any doubles since our girls are all 2 years old. We are getting guinea eggs now. They are tear drop shaped. Congrats on your first double!
    Kelly
