Don’t Be Hatin’

I know this is going to be a little controversial with some of you. Most people don’t like snakes. But I have to tell you, I personally think snakes are beautiful creatures. Bernie does too. So tonight when we were waiting on supper to finish up, I wasn’t even slightly surprised when Bernie exclaimed “There’s a snake going across the yard” and took off running to get outside. I yelled “Grab my camera!”

By the time Bernie got there, the snake had headed up a tree.

A perfectly harmless Black Snake – at least to humans.

Photobucket

They do eat mice and other annoying critters.

They are also known as Chicken Snakes. They don’t harm chickens. But they will eat chicken eggs.

Photobucket

They shy away from humans though.

Don’t be hatin’. These snakes are our friends. Get an extra hen or two so you can afford to lose an egg every now and again. It’s worth it. We’re about broke from buying mouse traps on the homestead.

Angie – I be with you on dat! Well, I don’t really hate them – but I sure don’t want them anywhere near me!

I’m with you guys on the poisonous variety. But other than that, I like snakes for the beneficial things they do for us. Sure, our cats take care of many rats and mice, but the snakes do too!

I love those pics of the snake in the tree, how cool! Ours are always on the ground, well, because we don’t have too many trees. LOL

I don’t mind snakes if I can’t see them, lol! We live on 80 acres so there are lots of them around. Unfortunately, I found one INSIDE my house last week. Just about peed my pants!!!! Still can’t figure out how it got past the 2 dogs and 2 cats!

Penny, I promise this isn’t a plug for my own blog, but wanted to prove to you why we like each other so much. :)

Oz Girl – I had to laugh at your post. When I traveled to Kansas each week I remember telling my husband how BIG the sky was there – not many trees to block that beautiful horizon! I always swore I could see the end of the earth there……

Mimi – We are in the middle of 65 acres here. And we’ve not found a snake in the house yet. But when we lived in town, on 1/4 of an acre, we found snakes in the house twice! Go figure. Both times they were black snakes, and both times we shooed them outside with no incidences. And at the time we had 3 cats and 3 dogs! Worthless critters ;)

Cee Cee – I love that post! And you don’t need to prove that to me. I’ve always known it :) Wasn’t it you that retrieved the fake egg from the snake????

Snakes are great! We’ve tried to bring a few onto our urban homestead, but we haven’t seen them after release. We’re also missing one in the house…but at least we don’t have mice!

  9. CeeCee says:

Yup, I made a snake barf so it wouldn’t die. I’m weird and proud of it. :)

  10. Lisa says:

Yep Penny, another reason for me to like you too!
I tend to capture snakes and relocate them just because of our pond … I love my frogs and don’t want to see them eaten. I’ve even captured a copperhead and relocated it to an uninhabitated area.

I don`t hate them I just don`t want them near me me, I had one wrap it`s around me one time and that was all it took. I`m sorry after that I am scared of them, and I am not afraid to admit it.

Beautiful pics! I’m so glad to see that I’m not the only one that loves nature and it’s inhabitants! Don’t get me wrong when I first see a snake it startles me until I can see what kind it is….but either way we both are frightened.
I just got finished reading all of CeeCees blog and I loved it!
It’s funny to hear the amount of men that are afraid of spiders and snakes….my J is afraid of lizards! I used to have an iguana and he wouldn’t get near it… too funny.

  13. If you look on my sidebar under ‘about me’ you will see the only thing in life I really dont like, is SNAKES…… if I had seen that HUGE monster in my garden I would of poo’d me knickers as I stood there……

I don’t usually have much problem with snakes. They better steer clear of the house though! Nice pictures!

  16. Weird and wonderful pictures though a little creepy seeing a snake shimmy through a tree. I love snakes, think they’re quite cool actually, as long as they aren’t poisonous and can’t swallow a small animal whole.

  17. I am new to your website. I also love chickens. We have Samatran Game chickens, a rooster and 3 hens. Currently one hen is raising 3 biddies she hatched a week ago. The chicken picture under your title “First peeps of 2010″ looks a lot like two of our hens. What is she? I have a few photos of our chickens, including the rooster who we named The Sultan. Currently I am experiencing difficulty keeping the mother hen and chicks away from the rooster. We just penned our rooster and hens this past week. They were free range for the past year. I hated to do it, but I also love to garden and they just tear up my flower beds! Anyway, we were keeping the hen and biddies in a brooder inside the roosting pen (which is separate from the day pen. I began letting them loose in the roosting pen, not an ideal place I admit. So today we let them go into the main pen with the rooster and other two hens. The Sultan immediately began trying to mate with mother hen, she resisted, and in the fray I could see it was a dangerous situation for the babies! So I managed to get The Sultan outside, free range, and let him back into the roost late in the afternoon. How do you handle situations like this? The game chickens are more or less wild and you really can’t do a whole lot with them. I did finally manage to get everyone back to their places but it took some time and it was raining!

I apologize for this long comment. Hope you have time to respond. Check out my blog. It isn’t as sophisticated as yours because I haven’t learned all the little tricks to spice it up. Pictures are as far as I have gotten.

    Namaste,
    Linda

I don’t hate snakes either, as I realize that in most instances they are beneficial to us. Hubby hates, hates, hates them! If I’m not around, he will as soon run them over with the lawn mower (or the car if they’re on the road)…. I avoided a big one on the road earlier in the week. Yes, I swerved for a snake, can you believe that? LOL

Those are some awesome pics you got of your snake… I’ve never seen one around here up in a tree, usually they’re on the ground. We have lots of bull snakes, very common in these parts, and they can be pretty big!
