Did You Really Knead That?

May 23rd, 2009

I never make a loaf of bread without recalling a story a fellow told on one of the cooking lists I subscribe to.

When he was young and first in his own apartment, this fellow got to missing the fresh, home made bread his mother made when he was living at home. So he called his mother and she gave him step by step instructions for making a loaf of home made bread. He attempted to make the bread several times, and each time it was a flop.

Completely frustrated, he called his mother on the phone to discuss his experiences and ask where he was going wrong. He explained each ingredient he used and each step he took.

His mother listened patiently, and when he finished explaining, she said “Well son, it sounds like you did everything right. But let me ask you a question. Did you knead it? I mean really knead it?

He responded “Well, no, mom. But I really wanted it!”

Bernie and I both got a good chuckle out of that story, and it is rare that I make a loaf of bread without Bernie asking me “Now, did you really knead that bread?”

Great story! I’m sure it will come to mind every time I make bread which is several times a week. Thanks again for giving me a good chuckle.

Thats funny. Isnt it funny how you think of memories like this when you are doing certain things?

Like, when my daughter was little she always called chicken legs “chicken on the cob”…so now whenever we have them, Shawn(my husband) and I always giggle about that. Funny thing is that G, the little guy you see on my blog, he calls them chicken knees…..what the heck? Its a leg. A chicken leg. I had no idea one could find another name for something so simple already!!

Hi Faith - I was told that story a few years ago, and I STILL find it funny. I imagine that fellow’s mom still laughs about it herself!

Hi Holly - thanks for stopping by. If you’re like me, you’ll never make bread again without thinking of that story. I love your blog, by the way!

Hey Frugalmom - Those kids of yours are SO darn cute. Bernie got a chuckle out of their names for chicken legs. I suspect they will forever be chicken on the cob to him now - but I am partial to chicken knees!

When my niece was very young, she saw my mom’s male dog laying on his back and said “Oh look - he has turtles!” That was over 30 years ago, and male parts are still referred to as turtles in my family.

Hi Marmy - the sun was shining on me today - until about halfway through washing our cars! Oh well, we kept washing them. They got a free rinse.
