Yes, it looks like everyone would rather be indoors, dry, warm. Your chickens will be very happy with their new digs!! It looks great.

I enjoyed reading your post and I completely understand. I started with one coop, and as my love affair with chickens grew, so did the housing needs. I added a second, larger coop in the enclosed yard. It was hilarious watching how the chickens decided who got "squatters" rights in the original coop and who would be brave enough to try out the new coop. I look forward to future posts - Debby

As a mailman, I still laugh when we get a box of "peeps". I carry in town, and the rural carriers know they will have to take them. The question is always, "How long do they have to ride in my car?" Not all of the packages go Peep Peep, some go Buzz Buzz and customers steer clear of the "Live Bee" boxes!

CottonLady - I do think tamping it really well makes a big difference. I hope you and your critters are doing well!

Kitaye - We've successfully made kraut in canning jars on our kitchen counter. It sounds like yours had mold? Mold may sometimes grown on pieces of cabbage that are not completely submerged in brine, but that won't taint the whole jar. Anything in the brine is protected by the acidity produced during fermentation - assuming it is fermenting!

Becky3086 - we've used canning jars too! We have a serious lack of space here though, so a large crock works better for us as it takes up a little less room.

Julie - Last year was the first year I fermented anything other than cabbage. I had a huge amount of green beans from our garden, so I fermented a bunch of them with some cut up onions. I had planned to ferment a lot of things last year, but so much ended up happening last summer that I never made it past the beans and cabbage. I really hope to do more this year. I need to talk to you about your kimchi recipe again!
