Hi Nicole - yes, my poor babies are a nervous wreck. The hawk was back yesterday evening, tormenting them through their run fence.

My chicken run does indeed have a cover. If you look at the picture at the top of each page of this blog - that is my chicken coop and run. You may be able to see in the picture that it has netting over the complete run. That's a shrimp net and it works wonderfully. They are safe in the run, which is why they are currently penned in it. It's when they are out free ranging that they are in danger. They only free range now because they began feather picking/plucking when confined in the run last year. Free ranging has all but eliminated that issue. I know I can't keep them confined in the pen for very long. I hope the hawks find another source of food soon. Losing one or two is something I would have to accept. But at this rate, the hawks won't stop until I have no more chickens!

Awww!!! Sorry that you lost one and the others are needing some chicken therapy! You know I know nothing about this stuff but is it not possible to put something over their..."area"? My parents' dogs' dog pen looks like a chain link box and there is tarp attached to the "roof" part...could you not do something similar? Sorry you're having such a rough time! You could always put 'em in the greenhouse LOL

Hi Lisa - I told the chickens about your concern. They said they'd feel better if you brought them some strawberries, peas, and lettuce from your garden. I told them I'd relay the message.

They've been penned up in the chicken run all day. This afternoon around 4PM, that stupid chicken hawk was back - sitting by the run, scaring them half to death. It could be a different one I suppose, but I suspect it's the same one.

On the upside, I'm losing any of the chickens while they're penned. Poor babies. THEY WANT OUT!

I'm so sorry that the chicken hawk keep attacking your chickens!! I know they have to eat too, but I would be sooo tempted to keep a gun with me to get them!! Not very Christian of me, I know.

Please whisper sweet nothings to your babies for me and let them know I'm sorry they keep getting scared!
