Diesel and Dolly are home. Bernie and I are over joyed. The cats are pouting. We are back to normal on the homestead.
When we went to pick the pups up this morning, the receptionist went on and on about how adorable Diesel and Dolly are. She said that when Dolly was in the recovery room and they brought Diesel in, he was still out and Dolly could barely move. Not only did Dolly wag her tail, but within a few minutes she tried to stand up and couldn’t. So she belly crawled over to Diesel and laid her head on him and went to sleep. The receptionist said the vet assistant called them all in to see it and they took pictures. They said they have never seen two sweeter puppies or two puppies that were so in love with each other. Naturally, we agree. And we whisked those puppies out of there so fast it left their heads spinning at that vet’s office.
The only thing they told us was to watch the incisions for infection, and to keep Diesel and Dolly calm. I’m not even going to comment on how ridiculous the whole “keep them calm” thing is.
When we got the pups home, they ate like they had never seen food before and then they took a nice long nap. When they woke up, they told me it was time to get the mail. I hesitated, but I knew if they missed their evening mail run, they would be impossible to live with. So we walked down to get the mail, and other than keeping them from getting in the creeks, I let them romp and play as usual. When we got home, Bernie grabbed his camera and said “Let’s walk around the yard a bit.” The puppies were all about that.
I took the egg basket out with the intent of collecting eggs and cleaning the chicken coop. Dolly had other ideas. She became completely obsessed with the egg basket.
I finally gave it to her.
She even posed for a picture.
And then, in complete disregard of the vet’s advice, Diesel and Dolly started running, jumping, chasing, and in general, NOT remaining calm.
They are not supposed to be doing this.
They are not supposed to be doing this either.
And they are definitely not supposed to be doing this.
After playing for a good long while, Diesel took a break to watch the chickens.
They’re inside resting now. And they are smiling while they sleep. It’s good to have these puppies home. It just didn’t feel right without them.
Oh, and here’s a picture of a raised bed and the green house.
That’s horseradish in the tire. Our potatoes, radishes, lettuce and spinach are growing like crazy. This week we’ll get the tomatoes, peppers, melons, etc. in. Lucky we didn’t do that this past weekend, when we had planned. It was 28 degrees this morning! But it’s looking like the week will warm up nicely.
Things are back to normal on the homestead. Well, as normal as it gets around here, anyway.

Yippee! They’re home, they’re home!!! And they certainly look thrilled and NOT calm at all! That picture of Dolly with the egg basket is too funny. Wonder why Diesel is really thinking about the chickens???
The greenhouse and the raised beds look great. Did you start your lettuce and spinach in the greenhouse?
Oops, I meant WHAT Diesel is really thinking about the chickens!
Hi Lilla – I’m pretty sure I know what was going through Diesel’s mind about those chickens! But he was good and only watched. And Dolly was so pleased with herself carrying that egg basket. She carried it for quite a while – until Diesel started acting disinterested – the she dropped it. Lordy, it’s good to have those little monkeys back home!
We stared the lettuce, spinach, and radishes in the raised bed. Since they are cool weather plants, we put them (the seeds) in around the end of March. They deal with cold weather just fine. They grow rather slowly until the weather gets in the 60s, and then they take off like crazy. The radishes are the biggest plants in the picture – they are out of control huge! We’re eating radish sandwiches and salads with radishes every day now. I need to get the warm weather plants in – hopefully that will be done this week.
I’m so glad the pups are home safely and feeling well. I SO enjoy your blog. Thanks for sharing.
Michele – it’s so good to hear from you! Thanks for the kind thoughts. I just can’t tell you how nice it is to have the pups back home. There is just nothing like puppy kisses – and they’ve about licked our faces raw! Sweet little puppies. I hope we never spend another day without them.
Glad the pups are back home and recovering so nicely!
I have greenhouse envy!!
I hope you got copies of the pics they took at the vet. How utterly sweet!
What a beautiful place you have!

Hi Jocelyn – it’s great to have them home. If I did not KNOW they just had surgery, I would never believe it. They are really doing great. And I do love that greenhouse. But now I need to get the plants out of it and into the ground!
Hi Faith – you know, I never even thought to ask for a copy of the pics. I was too busy crying! My sister mentioned the same thing to me. I need to call the vet’s office and ask about it. And thank you for the compliment about our place – we still have so much to do around here, and it’s taken over two years to get that grass growing! Don’t look too closely – it’s mostly weeds
But it’s green and that’s really all we care about!
They sure do look happy to be home. They sure have turned in to a nice pair of ” Hosses” LOL. They are huge. Give them a hug for me, and if you know anyone who would like to adopt a relative of theirs direct them to Popeye on my website. He is such a sweetie. If he stays long I will never let him go. I had a hard enough time parting with Dolly and Diesel’s Mom…which is Popeye’s sister.

Hooray! The pups are back home. Home sweet home. Didnt you just let out a big sigh when you pulled up to your house and let them out?
And are you ever in trouble, lady. Calm, my foot. Really? Cmon. Surely they know at the vets office that calm lasts about 10 seconds. How could they see all that open land and not want to run….
Hi Betty – Popeye sounds like such a sweetie. Must be in the genes – seems like all of the ones in that family have really sweet dispositions. And yes, these pups are turning into hosses for sure! I swear we see them growing when they stand still long enough!
Frugalmom – You’re right – they is no such thing as calm in Puppydom. That surgery didn’t slow them down for a second. The vet told us to take them out of leashes for 10 days and limit their activity. Other than walking them to the car from the vet office, they haven’t been on a leash since. I just can’t do that to them. I’ve been keeping an eye on the incisions, and they look just fine. In fact, they really look healed already. I’m sure they’re not, but the incisions look great and the pups don’t act as if they are in any pain whatsoever. So we let them run, play, and romp to their hearts’ content. I am keeping them out of the creeks (which is NOT easy) simply because I’m a little concerned the bacteria might cause issue with the incisions. Although as much of that water as they’ve drank in the past, I’m fairly certain they have complete immunity to anything in it. I’m also sure all the chicken/deer/rabbit/bear/coyote/etc. poop they’ve eaten helps with the immunity too
Poor Diesel someone picked his pocket!
In so glad the pups are home and well and ready for mischief…… love the little egg basket they are a particular passion of mine and I have quite a few LOL…. the pathetic person that I am
Hard to keep a puppy calm and to stop them running around….. ok…. IMPOSSIBLE lol

Hi Nicole – yes, poor little Diesel. Trust me when I tell you, it was time! We had a little “incident” last Saturday. He didn’t do the deed – but he got a bit excited and seemed very confused about it for a while. Needless to say, we watched him VERY carefully after that and his appointment could not have come a moment too soon!
Hi Marmitetoasty – I did know you collect girly girl pink cooking pots, but I didn’t know you collected egg baskets. The egg basket in that picture actually has special meaning to me. It belonged to one of my cousins, who died very prematurely. It was a decoration in her kitchen, and I was lucky enough to be gifted with it after she passed – long before I ever thought I would have chickens. It sat in my kitchen on a shelf for a good long while, and I finally decided to put it to use just a few months ago. And I love it. So does Dolly!
Happy Memorial Day weekend! Your puppies look so good – having a little nip and tuck didnt slow them down, did it? They are so pretty and handsome. Dolly is just too cute with your egg basket! We’ve had a couple of thundersorms here and my black lab, Lucky, is afraid of thunder so literally sits on my feet when I’m outside. I can’t get her to move one inch. She’s so pathetic!!
Your garden and greenhouse look so pretty. I do envy the greenhouse. Know you will enjoy the produce.
Take care,
Hi Cotton Lady – Thank you, and happy Memorial Day weekend to you too! Poor Lucky – my mom has a dog terrified of thunder. I feel so sorry for them (dogs scared of thunder). There’s just no way to comfort them, is there? Diesel used to act like he was going to be afraid of loud noises – but now he just barks at them. So not only do we get loud claps of thunder, we get Diesel barking at them, and then Dolly chiming in. Never a dull moment.
