We had some nice weather over the Thanksgiving holiday. Nice enough that I opened the kitchen window while I was cooking one afternoon.
Imagine my surprise at seeing this out that kitchen window.
Silly Tanya. She knows she’s not allowed on the deck.
I went outside to discuss her transgression with her.
And I was really glad I did. It seems Sarah was having similar thoughts about visiting with me on the deck.
And when I walked over to discuss it with her, I looked down and found Jake, Turklet, and baby Turklet contemplating the same thing.
Well, this was as good of an opportunity as any for me to take some pictures and give you a little update about what’s been going on around here with the turkeys, and the puppies.
You may have noticed there was only one baby turklet in that last picture. Sadly, I found the other one dead the day after the October snow storm came through. I really don’t know what happened, but it broke my heart.
Also, as you can surely see in that last picture, we discovered a few months ago that Turklet is a jake.
Yes, indeed. A gangly, clumsy, jake. *sigh* Turklet was dangerously close to being invited to the dinner table until Diesel’s surgeon said she would love to add him to her flock. He’s a sweet boy, and I know he’ll make a nice pet for her children.
Sarah has healed from her injury at an amazing rate. As she was healing, she was also molting. Poor girl. But the good news is that her wounds scabbed over very quickly, and are being covered by new feather growth around them – which makes me worry less about others pecking at her wounds. She was put back out with her flock within just a few days of her injury.
In that picture, if you look very closely, you can see the new feather shafts underneath her wing, and on the very top of it, that cover her wounds.
Jake finished molting and is, honestly, one of the most handsome Toms I have ever seen.
Diesel is doing really well after his surgery. He is just beginning to use his leg a little, and he rests a lot, but he’s getting around and his surgeon seems pleased with his progress.
Dolly gets a little annoyed at all the attention showered on Diesel, so we’re sure to spend a little quality time with her every chance we get.
And it’s nice to see the pups relaxing at night and feeling somewhat back to normal.
So, we’re all fine here and enjoying each day that we are blessed with.
I hope to get some posts up soon about some of my Christmas projects, and a few other things I’ve been meaning to post about.
And I hope each of you is enjoying this time of year with the people and critters that mean the most to you!

I am so happy to see everyone is mending so well & I love all the new photos of everyone. Yea for Turklet going to a good home and not being on the dinner table. Love you all. XXXOOO
Well, first off, Id like to say…I am so proud of you for having your camera to get those great shots of the turkeys. I love that one from the window.
Secondly, I think it was quite nice of them to want to pay their ma a visit…up on the deck…next to you…:-)
Do we switch to letters now? And C…..I am so happy happy happy that everyone is healing on the farm. I know this makes you happy, too.
D….Look how content and peaceful those pups look sleeping away like that. Now thats feeling safe and secure and loved….all wrapped into one. Okay, two pretty pup packages.
Oh, and one more thing….Im certain that when I come to visit Ill be able to sleep just like that…..no really, I mean it. I call the spot in front of the fire…..
The pic of Tanya made my day <3 I'm really sorry about the turkley though. Sarah looks great! And Jake truly is beauti..err.. handsome!! Give those puppies smooches for me!
Charlotte – Thank you! I’m pretty glad we found a good home for Turklet, too. XXXOOO
Marcee – 1 – can you believe I actually got pictures? I’m proud of me, too
B – I’m not sure why they have suddenly become obsessed with being on the deck. It’s a daily battle right now, and they just started with it. 3 – I am extremely happy everyone is healing, and I hope we can all stay healed for a while! D – I’m going to leave it up to you and Diesel to agree on who sleeps in front of the fireplace. He’s a really nice sharer though, and I suspect he’ll want to keep you warm while you sleep there
Terri – Tanya made me laugh peeking in like that. Silly turkeys! (((hugs)))
Penn,
I just love all the photos of the turkeys and the pups! I’m glad Turklet has found a home where he can bring joy to kids. And those girls just love coming for a visit! Jake is gorgeous. I understand turkeys are friendly, but are the Toms friendly too? I’d want to be able to pet Jake every time I saw him!
So glad Diesel is doing well and that Bernie is making sure Dolly doesn’t feel left out.
Thank you for sharing your update.
Susan – our Toms are very friendly, and follow us around the yard like puppies. We spent a lot of time with Jake, Sarah, and Tanya their first year, so they are all especially tame and friendly and you can pet them, even though they will step away and act annoyed
Turklet and baby turklet follow us around, but we didn’t spend as much time with them, so they will run if we try to pet them. But they will both eat out of our hands. I’m enjoying the turkeys very much! Oh, but I will add that males are males, and Jake can be quite mean to turklet, and even the roosters if he thinks they are in any way threatening what he perceives his position in the barnyard to be!
Too cute…peeking in the window at you! Glad Sarah and Diesel are doing so well. Neat picture of Bernie and Dolly.
Cold day in Texas…25 degrees at 10:50 a.m. but the little hens are out enjoying their flock block. Boy do they love that! Goatie girls don’t seem to mind with their thick coats. Guess I’m the only one that doesn’t like the cold!
Blessings!
Love, love, LOVE the picture of Tanya peeking in the window! Can’t wait to hear about your Christmas projects. And such good news that everyone is on the mend.
Yep, I love that pic of Tanya peeking in the kitchen window too, made me laugh out loud! They seem to provide you with boatloads of entertainment. LOL Glad to hear that everyone is healing nicely, but oh-so-sorry to hear about the little turklet that didn’t make it. Poor little baby.
I noticed CottonLady’s comment re: her hens and their flock block – boy do our love their flock block too! We think it keeps them busier than usual – we ran out of the flock block a week or so ago, so we’ve been sprinkling a small amount of scratch grain instead every few day. Twice now we’ve had a hen outside of their pen. Our barred rock Roseanne was the first one, and she was out all night before we noticed her the next morning – she was lucky to survive that I guess! Today when we returned from hours of errands, Midge our Ameraucana was outside!
Silly chickens!!
Guess we’ll have to get another flock block to keep them busy!
Hope you’re having a nice weekend Penny. *hugs*
Awesome pics! I agree Jake is a handsome fella! I’m so glad Sarah healed up and that Diesel is on the mend. I’ve been meaning to call you but so many things have gotten in my way
My hand surgery went way better than I ever could have expected!! It seems that there is a lot of healing going on in our family
Love you! XXXOOO
Oh Joy, Sarah has recovered. Those picture of her wounds looked so grim. She looks wonderful now. And so does Diesel.
I don’t know how I missed this post! Your turkeys are beautiful. I agree that is such a pretty Tom. I thought ours was pretty but yours may have him beat. I am so glad your Diesel is doing better.
Such beautiful turkeys! And it warms my heart to see such well loved dogs.
That first picture is funny. I had to look twice to realize there was a real turkey outside. I hope all of the animals are healing up. Seems like you have had a rough spell.
oh how I love your Turkeys…. please tell me your not going to eat them
– oh and that little egg head whisk on your kitchen windowsill is just gorgeous LMFAO hahaha x
The peeping tom turkey is hilarious lol. The dogs look awesome!
Hi, I am new to your blog. I will be ordering turkeys for the first time this year, (in April) and am researching a good breed. I want one that is good for eating, but also breeds/reproduces.
What breed do you have? Do they reproduce or is turkelet ordered from the hatchery as well? Thanks!
Hi Amy. Thanks for stopping by. We got Tanya, Sarah, and Jake as young poults from a breeder I know. They are Standard Bronze turkeys. Tanya and Sarah are both very good layers, and both go very broody. They sat on nests for months before I finally gave them both eggs. They hatched out 3 poults between them and they were both excellent mothers. They would have hatched out many more, but I didn’t want many more turkeys. I hope that helps. Best of luck to you on your homestead!
