I spent last weekend in a cabin on the Shenandoah River with some blog/Facebook friends. It was a wonderful, relaxing weekend and such a joy to spend it with wonderful women, and maybe even a ghost or two……. Angie did a great job recapping it all on her blog, so be sure to head on over to Home Grown and read about The Amityville Cabin……
A couple of us girls split an order of the Mother from red, white, and malt vinegars. Angie was kind enough to share the Mother from her Apple Cider Vinegar with us as well. I put all of mine in quart mason jars to start them off.
And then I secured some cheesecloth over them. They look like they’re wearing night caps.
I’m really looking forward to having some nice vinegar on hand.
Charlotte was kind enough to gift us with a ton of turnips and greens. I took a couple bags of turnip roots. Look at the size of these things!
I ended up with 19 pints of them.
Angie gifted me with a couple of quarts of fresh goats milk, and even though this is an awful picture, I want to show you the mozzarella I made with some of it.
It was so pretty and tasty. I’ve made cheese before, but never with fresh goats milk. I was just tickled with it and it motivates me to find a suitable buck to mate wth Georgia.
In about a week and a half I’m heading over to Germany. If you follow me on Facebook you may have seen posts by my wonderful friend Eleonora. She is like a sister to me, and she lives in Mainz. I’m going to visit her and her family with my parents. Bernie will stay home and take care of the animals. I’m so very excited to see our friends again, and I’m so very sad to be leaving Bernie here. But we’ll only be gone a week, and Bernie is excited about the wonderful German candies I’ve promised to bring him. He was invited to go with us, of course, and as much as he’d love to go he decided to stay home and take care of things around here. (I didn’t want y’all to think I’d run off and leave him without begging him to come with me!)
I was hoping this winter would be time for things to slow down so we could relax and enjoy some down time. It’s not starting out that way though! How is your winter going? Are you staying busy, or have things slowed down a little? What kind of winter projects do you have planned?
